Abstract

Introduction: Rhinophyma is a benign condition, where a bulbous and lobed nose is observed due to thickening of the skin and sebaceous hyperplasia. This produces an unsightly appearance with psychosocial consequences. At present there is no consensus on the treatment of rhinophyma, its management and surgical procedures are very varied, in this work satisfactory results are presented with scalpel decortication.

Objective: Results achieved with decortication as a surgical treatment in rhinophyma. Methods: Study with descriptive design of five patients with Rhinophyma treated at the central clinic Cira García, in the Plastic Surgery service in the period 2000 – 2022. Results: Five patients (elderly) with rhinophyma were treated and decortication was performed as a surgical treatment. There were no complications. All patients were satisfied with the aesthetic results achieved.

Conclusions: Scalpel decortication is an optimal surgical alternative for the treatment of rhinophyma, early epithelialization is guaranteed with satisfactory aesthetic results.
