Treatment of Glabellar Wrinkles by Surgical Denervation of Corrugator Muscles Via upper Blepharoplasty
Keywords:
corrugator muscles; surgical denervation; glabellar wrinklesAbstract
Introduction: Contraction of the corrugator muscles is the cause of the appearance of vertical glabellar wrinkles, which are dynamic in youth and static in aging. Long-term results of surgical denervation of these muscles are contradictory.
Objective: To determine the results of surgical denervation through upper blepharoplasty in terms of corrugator muscle contractility, changes in glabellar wrinkles, brow ridge spacing, and potential complications.
Methods: A prospective longitudinal descriptive study was conducted in 12 patients who underwent surgical denervation through upper blepharoplasty in the Plastic Surgery and Caumatology Department of the Hermanos Ameijeiras Clinical and Surgical Hospital.
Results: In the immediate postoperative period, 100% of the participants were unable to contract the corrugator muscles; At 3 months postoperatively, the frown lines between the eyebrows were observed to be less noticeable; the interbrow distance increased in 83.3% of participants; glabellar wrinkles at rest after denervation disappeared in 41.7% of patients and were attenuated in the remaining 58.3%. All complications were reversible.
Conclusions: Complete denervation of the corrugator muscles was not achieved in the long term; there was a decrease in muscle contractility with improvement in glabellar wrinkles in all patients.
