Abstract

Introduction: Burns are frequent injuries that have high morbidity and mortality; Determining the clinical status, as well as the patients with the highest risk of complications, is a priority for the care process. Different mortality scales are available for burn patients, such as the Cuban scale and the Baux index.

Methods: Retrospective, longitudinal, analytical study of patients with burn injuries who were admitted to the burn unit of the Hermanos Ameijeiras Clinical Surgical Hospital from January 2012 to December 2018. The analysis was performed with the IBM statistical package. SPSS version 25.0 for Windows

Results: 207 cases were analyzed, 52.7 % men with a mean age of 48.8±17.5 years. On a Cuban scale with minor injuries 34.3 % and critical 20.8%, with mortality of 22.7 %. The mortality group presented a higher percentage of burned body surface area, Baux index, critical or extreme critical condition (P0<0.001, <0.001, <0.001) and shorter hospital stay (p=0.003). There is a slight correlation between the Baux index and the Cuban scale (p=0.575). The ROC curve was performed, the sensitivity and specificity of the value of the Cuban scale and the Baux mortality index were calculated. The highest sensitivity in the Cuban scale was with the value of greater than severe.
